Colleges Ease Burden of Growth with Online Courses

Why are colleges turning to online courses to grow their student base? There are plenty of reasons. Here are a few:

• More students need access to content and want to graduate on time.
• Nearly half of all undergrads require remedial work prior to regular credit classes. This initial hurdle can lead to significant discouragement in finishing a degree.
• Shrinking state budgets reduce the number of available seats in a class.

To address the aforementioned problems and keep students on pace universities are starting to lean toward the Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) model of delivering high-quality course content and remedial material to students.

San Jose State recently created two pilot programs that combine online course material into the traditional instructional material.
