We receive a lot of questions from educators about technical requirements to use ProctorFree’s online proctoring program. Instructors are usually concerned about students with older computers that might not have a webcam or microphone-two very important requirements for online proctoring. Our online proctoring system needs a webcam and microphone in order to authenticate students with a visual and auditory confirmation.
In reality, PC world reports that 79% of laptops now have webcams with the majority of those also having microphones. In a day and age where Skype, Google Hangout, and Facetime are just as popular as telephones, computer manufacturers are making webcams and microphones standard in most computers to meet consumer demands.
In the rare event that a student doesn’t have a webcam or microphone installed on their computer, we recommend purchasing a webcam with a built in microphone from any retailer. These user-friendly, easy-to-install webcams are available anywhere and are incredibly affordable. Just a quick Amazon search reveals that webcams with mics can be purchased for as little as $5. $5 is a small price to pay for the convenience of online proctoring from the comfort of where ever you are.
Other Technical Requirements
The only other component required for online proctoring is a high speed internet connection.
In conclusion, if a student or instructor is concerned about their online proctoring session being hindered by technical issues we take every precaution to make sure that does not happen. We work with each student individually prior to a test being taken to make sure everything is working properly. If not, our technical team works through each problem until it’s right. If a test session is delayed we will gladly work with the individual to make sure there is enough time to test or reschedule a testing session to meet an individual’s needs.
We want students and instructors to have a positive experience so we will do everything in our power to make sure that happens.
